One ‘big fish’ tops 1,000 ‘small fry’, says Koh

Go big or go home, was Koh’s message to the nation’s enforcement officers. — file picIPOH, Aug 22 — Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon today called on enforcement agencies to go after the “big fish”, saying the current public perception is that they are only focusing on small cases. Dr Koh, who is minister in the prime minister’s department, said they should redouble their efforts and utilise their resources to fight more crime involving high-profile cases. It was the public perception that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Customs Department and the Inland Revenue Board should nab the “big fish” instead of just going after the small traders, he told reporters after opening the Perak Gerakan delegates meeting, here. Dr Koh said it would suffice for the enforcement agencies to just conduct random checks on the small traders to ensure compliance with the law instead of resorting to “carpet bombing”. He said they should remove all obstacles in their way to fight corruption involving high-profile cases. “Action against one ‘big fish’ is probably better than action against 1,000 ‘small fish’,” he said. Earlier, in his speech, Dr Koh advised government officers and staff to expedite the processing of applications to enable swift and smooth business transactions. Any delay in the processing of applications could hamper government projects and business transactions and stifle national economic growth, he said. He also said that while the government allowed foreign labour in the country, it should also ensure effective legal control and monitoring of these workers. Disallowing foreign labour now would undermine the operations of, particularly, the plantation and manufacturing sectors, he said. — Bernama
