Alis perverse logic The Malaysian Insider

August 25, 2010

Perhaps it was right of Umno to consider Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the post of deputy president, going by Datuk Seri Ali Rustams latest statement on the Friday sermon furore. The Malacca Chief Minister today accused his Penang counterpart of fanning communal politics and challenged Lim Guan Eng to state if he planned to become a Muslim, referring to the continued khatib controversy in the island state.I want to ask Lim Guan Eng, (do you) want to embrace Islam? Lim Guan Eng, do you agree with the Penang mosque praying for you to enter Islam? asked Mohd Ali.If yes, I will also pray for you, he told reporters here, straight-faced.At best, his logic is perverse. At worst, its nonsense.Does Lim have to agree to be a Muslim for the entire issue to be considered settled? After all, it was Penang Umno that first accused the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government in Penang of getting the khatib to drop the Yang di-Pertuan Agongs name in favour of Lims. They backpedalled after conceding they were unsure if it was a directive but remained adamant the state government should put an end to the practice. This despite the admission by one khatib, Zakaria Ahmad, that he had done it out of his own volition.A central point that has emerged every time Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein or Ali Rustam have spoken is that taking a leadership post is not equated with logical thinking or reasoning. It would appear that this is not only a political party that is rudderless but alarmingly for Malaysia, this is also a political party where its leaders are incapable of debating logically. One can mouth off whatever nonsense and still be a leader or get a senior position in Umno. Logic does not matter, just rhetoric. What a pity that perverse logic and rhetoric has taken over a party that led Malaya to independence. Umno must count itself lucky its top leaders do not shoot from the hip.Not for long though. Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Muhy! iddin wi ll one day have to give way to those who think like Ali. Or Hishammuddin.
