Sex video: How low can you go?

Ramdas Tikamdas

The vast majority of ordinary decent Malaysians from all walks of life and all sectors of our society are deeply disturbed and dismayed at the obsessive fixation by the institutions of state with sordid sex for well over a decade since the shameful tumultuous times of 1998 just before the turn of the century.

The institutions which have and are continuing to expend the limited resources of state on a single politician's private life include the Royal Malaysia Police, the Attorney General's Chambers, the Judiciary and the mainstream media via state television and national newspapers.

Who has done an audit of the man-hours expended by an array of forensic scientists, doctors, private investigators and others deployed by the state in dedication to a single-minded exploration and analysis of someone's anatomy?

All of this not for the advancement of science but with the dubious object of achieving the political assassination of a political leader. Why not just try to achieve this object by the ballot and spare the nation any further distress and debacle.

Mind you, while our nation is gripped with this momentous national agenda the rest of the world grapples with systemic global socio-economic crises, social revolutions, natural calamities, earthquakes and tsunamis and nuclear fallouts.

Instead of focusing and directing national energies in response to these global challenges and to foster the national spirit to shape our future for progress and prosperity, our nation state appears to carry on oblivious with apparently no other 'serious problem' except this one fixation.

What is most shocking is that the 'fallout' from this national obsession has reached such a critical state that editors-in-chief and journalists of national newspapers, political publications and electronic media were unbelievably persuaded to actually see for themselves a pornographic video in a 'cloak and dagger' operation staged by persons who were able to pass themselves off as "Datuk T" without the editors and journalist even employing their journalistic instincts to investigate and discover their identities.

One would have thought that editors and journalists are supposed to report news, not make news themselves and that too in a pornography session!

That is the sordid 'fallout' of the nation's obsession and preoccupation on baser human traits for over a decade, such that all manner of professionals appear to have completely lost their bearings.

We don't know yet how low we can go - with deference to the 'Limbo Rock' song - because unless we snap out of the mesmerizing stupor created by these stage managed nefarious plots, we may irretrievably lose our national moorings.
