Virgin's Branson condemns Sodomy II, tells Najib to stop it

Malaysia Chronicle

Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson is the latest international figure to call on Prime Minister Najib Razak to stop the sodomy trial against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, which has been widely followed overseas and condemned as a trumped-up case aimed at derailing Anwars political career.

However, despite the slew of calls for justice from prominent global leaders such as Nobel Laureate Al Gore, Bransons words are also unlikely to be heeded.

Anwar is still the glue that keeps the Pakatan Rakyat together. He is still an icon to the nation. There may be falling attendance at his trials but that is due to frustration that Najib is out to get Anwar and will jail him at all costs no matter what evidence Anwar produces to show he is innocent. Najibs political position is even weaker now than Mahathirs was in 1998, Batu MP Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

Mahathir and Sodomy I

In 1998, at the height of Asian financial crisis, Anwar was both deputy prime minister and finance minister. Like Thailand, Malaysia experienced capital flight and Anwar wanted to follow the economic prescriptions suggested by the International Monetary Fund. But that would rock many of the companies linked to ruling party Umno and the children of then prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad.

In a shocking move, Mahathir sacked Anwar and jailed him for corruption and sodomy. Anwar pleaded not guilty but had to spend six years in until he was freed in 2004 after Mahathir retired. The countrys top court acquitted Anwar of the sodomy charges.

Even in 1998, the highly publicized trial was condemned worldwide. In 2008, just days after Anwar announced he ! would se ek a parliamentary seat, his aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan accused him of sodomy. Again, the circumstances look highly suspicious given that Saiful had been taken to meet Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor before lodging a complaint with the police. Sodomy is illegal in Malaysia.

Najib, Rosmah and Sodomy II

Anwar has accused the first couple of fabricating the latest charges together with Saiful. The current trial dubbed Sodomy II has also been slammed as being one-sided and aimed to lock up the popular Anwar before the next general election, which is widely expected to be held next year.

If youre a bold leader, you should get rid of things like this which are damaging your reputation. This has gone on for a long, long time. It looks bad overseas, Malaysian Insider reported Branson, who is in town to attend the Dawn of the New Decade: Alternative Investments in Asia conference, as saying.

Anwar's trial is due to resume on October 14.
