Perkasa demands ISA action against Christian ‘preacher’

GOMBAK, Sept 29 – Perkasa demanded today that the Internal Security Act (ISA) be used against a man who had allegedly insulted Islam in a series of videos on YouTube.

Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali allayed concerns that ordinary citizens would take matters into their own hands if no immediate action were taken against the preacher. Benjamin Stephens, believed to be a Christian preacher had uploaded recordings of himself preaching in a Sarawak church – believed to have been taken on March 25, 2006 – on the popular video-sharing website, where it is accessible to millions around the world. “Use the ISA against those who have consistently been insulting Islam.

Prevention is always better than finding a cure. “This is a serious issue. Perkasa regrets the actions of the preacher has been irresponsible in insulting Islam,” Ibrahim (picture) told reporters today. The outspoken politician claimed that the government had been “too slow” in taking action against Benjamin, saying that the normal investigation process took up “too much time”. “You have to be quick in cases like this. The normal prosecution process just takes too much time. Perkasa is of the opinion that if the government is not firm in dealing with this issue, it will only get worse.

“People will support the government (using ISA) if the intentions are for peace,” added Ibrahim. The Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM) earlier today applauded Putrajaya’s probe into the matter. “The so-called preacher had acted as an individual representing his own views and not the official views of the churches in Malaysia,” it said in a media statement today, drawing a thick line between its member churches and man portrayed in the videos. Information, Communications and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Utama Rais Yatim had quickly ordered the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to thoroughly check the videos after they were highlighted two days ago by upset Muslim groups, and prepare a report for action against the man.
