US move to wiretap BlackBerry, Facebook, Skype

After Indias attempt to open up encrypted BlackBerry messages, US security officials now want power to have wiretaps on BlackBerry, Facebook, Skype and other online communications. The NY Times says federal officials want sweeping new regulations for the Internet, under which they would be able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages. A bill is being prepared for submission to Congress next year.

An Internet activist says They basically want to turn back the clock and make Internet services function the way that the telephone system used to function. But the FBI says, Were talking about lawfully authorized intercepts. Were not talking expanding authority.
