Star moves into iPad
PJ MEDIA GOSSIP
The Star is now available as an iPad app for the stylish tablet computer by Apple. Im told it matches Apples stylishness. The app was developed by a team supervised by Michael Aeria, former chief editor and v-p of multimedia, who was brought back from retirement for this.
Mikes also putting together a book to commemorate The Stars 40th anniversary next September. Charles Chan, one of the original 1971 crew, was said to have bagged the task early this year, together with copy desk duties, but ran into visa problems.
The 40th anniversary is the responsibility of a high-powered team: chief operating officer Ho Kay Tat and chief editor Wong Chun Wai are co-chairmen. Kamal M Hashim is the last of the 1971 officers still active at management level.
- Khoo Kay Soon, one of the old fogies let go by the NST at the end of last year, has now rejoined The Star as associate editor, the usual vague important-sounding title for executives without desk management duties. Hell be supervising front-page design (as at NST when elder brother Khoo Kay Peng wasnt around) and generally helping D. Raj the production editor who just turned 50.
- Johan Fernandez is handling the last line of defence checking final page proofs and generally being super check sub.
- Kay Peng, the first chief sub in 1971, has taken over running the Malaysian Mirror with the departure of Shah A Dadameah (also a 1971 veteran), whos gone back to The Star news desk to assist in clearing copy. Francis Siah has also left the Mirror to return to Sarawak.
- Clement Hii, the Stars executive deputy chairman and the man behind the Mirror, is preparing to finish his contract and return fulltime to Segi College but is also looking at other activities, possibly political, in home-state Sarawak.
- PK Katharason, whose brother K Bala died in Langkawi earlier this year, has returned to the Stars KL news desk for copy desk duties, after retiring as Kota Kinabalu chief. For a spe! ll he wa s keeping up Free Malaysia Today between Mohsin Abdullahs departure and the arrival of K Kabilans team in February.
- C Y Choi has gone back to head the Stars Penang office, with the closure of the papers London bureau. R Nadeswaran has just settled in to open the Suns London bureau, rumoured to be a reward for his PKFZ activities or to keep him off the scene. Nades says hes just there to be with his daughter, whos entered college.
