Utar is a second MMU
From HJ, via e-mail
Referring to Jansis letter titled 'Restore integrity and good governance in Utar', I fully agree with her opinion. No doubt Utar is moving towards to research university status, hence , I as an academic staff must work hard towards achieving this goal.
However, it is the management system that I'm complaining about. Since this so-called new management system (from MMU) coming to Utar, all the academic staff are ordered to meet the target marks of the subject that he or she is teaching.
Therefore, if the target marks (average marks of final examination) is not met, the respective lecturer will be ordered by the dean to explain the failure to meet these target marks.
In most cases, the management does not accept the lecturers point of view and order the respective lecturers to re-write another explanation letter, which is acceptable to president.
Consequently, most academic staff will meet these so-called target average marks by hook or by crook in order to avoid writing these explanation letters.
As an academic staff, I fully support Prof Chuah on conducting research and publishing research papers, after all it also benefits the staff and university.
It is important to note that not all research papers are able to be published within a year, especially those involving experimental works, which may require years to collect data.
Is the number of research papers more important than the quality of research? It is unfortunate that the Utar management is interested on number of papers instead of quality of research papers.
No doubt, Prof Chuah is very capable researcher but bear in mind not all research fields are same.
In addition, all the academic staff are burdened by teaching, administration and consultancy works.
It is true that Chuah and his MMU team will punish those staff especially those old staff if they did not obey Chuahs instruction.
They just humiliate them by saying that they are lous! y or inc apable of handling a task. I think Utar is not Utar anymore.
It should be called second MMU since all the management skills originated from MMU.
