PR reps should resign to attract development funds

by Malik Najib, Melaka

The recent Hulu Selangor by-election has underlined yet again how money and 'development' promises are the best weapon to attract votes.

It has been said that BN spent more than RM70 million in this constituency during the short campaign period. Prime minister Najib Razak has also made promises, which if not kept, would render all those millions of ringgit on campaigning to waste.

For the rakyat, this is good news, even if one is likely to call it bribery. As the BN is desperate to show that support is moving back to its side, it will be a blessing if a by-election is called every now and then in constituencies neglected by the federal government. Funds such as for schools and hospitals should come from the Federal coffers, and only a by-election seems to be an effective way to get them.

One is not praying for PR reps to start kicking bucket and trigger elections. But they would make the constituents grateful to them if they resign their seats and make the constituency a magnet for federal funds in the millions.

It seems a resigning MP can channel funds for development as much as a dead MP!
