Awaiting Dr M's response

by Gerald Foo

I, like many other Malaysians, am waiting with trepidation the response of our beloved former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the government's move to legalise gambling.

Dr Mahathir is after all the most suitable person to lead any movement to protest the legalisation of such a vice. He has defended the Malay community and spoken out against those who question bumiputera rights.

As the brain behind Perkasa, he has urged Malays to make sure they do not lose their political power and also asked them to be cautious of the political trend now.

But more importantly, he has consistently spoken out against the culture of speculative "gambling" at the stock markets and attacked speculators who he called rogues and who treat the stock markets as casinos.

As such, I am sure that he has his strong views about prime minister Najib Razak's decision to give the halal certificate to tycoon Vincent Tan. Surely Dr Mahathir would not want our youths to treat the padang bola as their casinos? Although Vincent may be a close friend, I am sure that when it comes to race and religion, Mahathir would not hold his tongue.
