Kedah can show the way

by Alex Tan, Alor Setar

Syabas to Harakahdaily over its recent exclusive reports on Gunung Keriang and the Cameron-Kuala Lipis highway project.

It is refreshing to note that you give space to such important topics. Environmental issues are equally, if not more, important than party politics. Of course, with the right political party coming to power, environmental issues can be given due attention.

I do not have any hope that the dire situation of the Orang Asli and the environmental damage caused by the Cameron Highland-Kuala Lipis highway will be given attention by the BN government in Pahang.

That having said, I just hope the Kedah state government will follow up on Arshad Khan's shocking report of filth and the deplorable condition at Gunung Keriang. It should prove to Malaysians that it means serious business and is different from its predecessors. Clean the place up and make Gunung Keriang the pride of Kedahans again. If that is done, it will be remembered at the next general elections.

The exposures are only the tip of iceberg. Most tourist destinations in the country lack proper maintenance, especially when they are visited by locals.

Such selective maintenance shows our disrespect to ourselves and our children. That is why when the Terengganu state government announced plans to make Pulau Redang as an elite gateway, one is not surprised. Their oversized greed for money shows their tiny-sized knowledge about environment and how it should be preserved at all costs so that everyone can enjoy.
