Pull out of Pakatan if you’re sincere, DAP told

PETALING JAYA: Selangor MCA has challenged the DAP to pull out from Pakatan Rakyat as its stand on hudud law opposes that of PAS.

The DAP was good at attacking the MCA but “became a coward” in dealing with its own coalition members, said state public complaints bureau chief Datuk Theng Book.

“The DAP has always been against hudud law and (Opposition leader Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) now is openly for hudud law. Where are their guts where PAS and PKR are concerned?” he said at a press conference here yesterday along with other MCA representatives.

Theng said the MCA had always been consistent in opposing the hudud law, with its president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek stating it would withdraw from Barisan Nasional if the controversial law was implemented.

Selangor MCA secretary Wong Koon Mun said PAS was advocating the hudud law in Kelantan to safeguard and retain its Malay votes in the state for the upcoming general election.

In Shah Alam, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said there were some implementation issues that needed to be ironed out, as the bill in Kelantan was said to be incomplete, and because of the absence of a pardon process.

Khairy stressed that PAS and Umno did not have enough MPs to amend the Constitution, which needed the support of two-thirds of the Dewan Rakyat.

Separately, the DAP had sent an open letter to The Star questioning the accuracy of reports that the party’s top leadership would quit the Pakatan coalition if hudud law became part of its joint policy.

Star Online had on Sept 26 reported that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had threatened the resignation of the party’s top leadership from the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council if hudud law was found to be in the CPF or Buku Jingga.

His political secretary Zairil Khir Johari said Lim had made no threats to quit the Pakatan leadership council or the coalition.

“All Lim had said was that the entire CEC leadership would resign from their party posts to take full responsibility if hudud law was found to be included in the CPR or Buku Jingga,” Zairil said in the letter yesterday.
