Ng Yen Yen: Low foreign visitor arrivals to Kedah raise alarm bells

ALOR SETAR, Oct 29 — The Ministry of Tourism is concerned over the continued decline in foreign tourist arrivals to Kedah, Tourism Minsiter, Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said today.

Foreign tourist arrivals have plunged significantly from 4,5 million in 2007, to 3,8 million in 2008 and 2009, while 2010 charts the worst number of foreign tourist arrivals with a measly figure of 2.7 million. Dr Ng has indicated that although there was an increase of foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia in 2010, the same could not be said of Kedah.

Dr Ng (picture) who is on an official visit to the Kedah has urged the State government to review and do more to promote Kedah by enhancing existing tourism products such as the padi museum and cultural village centre as this would benefit the economy of the state and create jobs for the Kedah people.

According to a Bernama report, the Minister is currently in talks with a Russian airline for direct routes between Langkawi and Russia to be established due to the huge potential in luring Russian tourists to the State. According to Dr Ng, 60,000 Russian tourists ad flocked to Thailand last year, but only 37,000 made it to Malaysia. The direct flight solution is aimed to increase the number of Russian tourists to Kedah.

The recent announcement made by the Prime Minister in Budget 2012 in which RM420 million development budget for Langkawi is part of the move to increase foreign tourist arrivals to Kedah, the Minister further explained.

Dr Ng has also announced that RM10 million has been allocated to upgrade the ferry terminal in Perlis to provide better facilities such as public toilets, surau and comfortable seats for the public.

Commenting on the recent floods that hit Thailand, Dr Ng has assured that Malaysia would not suffer a similar fate since the country is generally free from natural disasters. She added that the annual flood in the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia would not affect tourism to this country as other places such as Sabah or Kuala Lumpur could be alternative destinations to the tourists to this country.
