Chua: Pakatan non-Muslim reps need to speak up

BATU PAHAT: The MCA wants to hear what the non-Muslim representatives from Pakatan Rakyat think of the hudud issue that PAS is pursuing.

They need to voice out their views as it will affect the whole country even if the law applies only to Muslims, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

"It is important for the non-Muslim representatives in Pakatan to make a stand," he said, asking if their silence meant that they were afraid of PAS or they supported the idea.

"We understand it is the right of Muslims to practise this law but, if it is forcefully implemented in the country, the repercussions will be felt by all," Dr Chua told reporters after attending the Johor MCA meeting here yesterday.

"The law will have implications on the country's economy and administrative, education and legal systems."

Regarding the MCA's loss of several seats to the DAP in the last general election, Dr Chua said the MCA was confident that the tide would turn at the next polls.

"At today's meeting, I warned MCA grassroots members to avoid being complacent and to continue addressing the people's needs," he said, adding that the DAP was determined to crush the people's support for the MCA, especially in Johor.

He added that the support of the Chinese community for the MCA was positive and this was evident at the recent 1MCA Medical Foundation dinners hosted by several MCA divisions in the past month.
