Zunar in court today to challenge KDN ban of his books

MalaysiaKini and cartoonist Zunar take their continuing struggle for free speech to the Court of Appeal in Kuala Lumpur today, to challenge a KDN ban on Zunars cartoon collections 1Funny Malaysia and Perak Darul Kartun

The two books were banned by the home ministry in June last year, for allegedly being prejudicial to public order, after more than two months of police harassment in the form of seizures from book shops all over the country. MalaysiaKini and Zunar are seeking a judicial review of the ban.

1Funny Malaysia is a collection of Zunars cartoons from Malaysiakini from 2005 to 2009. Perak Darul Kartun is a compilation of cartoons and articles by Zunar and other cartoonists and writers. The book was published in February last year by Zunars own publishing company Sepakat Efektif Sdn Bhd,

In September Zunar was arrested under the Sedition Act after police raided his office and seized about 70 copies of his latest book, Cartoon-o-phobia, which was due to be launched the same night by deposed Perak mentri besar Nizar Jamaluddin. He was detained overnight after being taken on a run-around to seven police stations around the city.

His arrest was for publishing books considered detrimental to public order and that could influence the people to revolt against government policies.

Zunar chose the title Cartoon-o-phobia to illustrate and reflect the fears of certain parties to cartoons. I am thinking of registering the term Cartoon-o-phobia as a new word that carries the definition of individuals or parties who are afraid of cartoons and use poli! tical po wer to act against cartoonists, he told the Star.

At the court hearing today, Zunar and Malaysiakini will be represented by lawyers Edmund Bon, Amer Hamzah Arshad, Edward Saw, K Shanmuga, Aston Paiva and Fahri Azzat.

There is little room for doubt that the ban on Zunars works is politically motivated and is political persecution of Zunar for holding political views contrary to those of Barisan Nasional. His cartoons have picked on the sensitive subjects of Najib Razak and Rosmah Mansors involvement in the purchase of submarines for the Navy, on the controversial constitutional coup detat that overthrew Nizar Jamaluddins government in Perak, and on the conduct of court cases against Anwar Ibrahim.
