The wish of the people – Liew Fan Chyi

December 28, 2010

DEC 28 – The perception of most people about the government propaganda “1Malaysia” is that all races are treated equally; we are all Malaysians; regardless of our differences, there is mutual acceptance and respect; solidarity, and the creation of a harmonious life.

For such a beautiful vision, who would disagree? Who would not want a wealthy and strong country to live and work in? Who would want the country to have bloodshed because of ethnic conflict, and a life of constant fear and anxiety?

“1Malaysia” is the universal wish of the people. If it is expanded into 1 Asia, 1 World or 1 Earth, I believe that no one would protest, because it is the dream of all mankind to achieve world peace. Therefore, when the people support “1Malaysia”, they are actually supporting a dream of peace and stability.

People support the concept put forward by the Barisan Nasional (BN), but it does not mean that people would support the BN who has proposed this concept. Therefore, there is no need for the Pakatan Rakyat to ban the display of the “1Malaysia” sign on commercial billboards in Selangor, citing the reason “to prevent billboards from being used for political propaganda”.

The Pakatan Rakyat accused that “1Malaysia” is a cover-up of the hypocrisy, abuse of power and division in the country and therefore cannot agree with or support it. The Pakatan Rakyat has made a mistake here, that is, the essence of the “1Malaysia” concept is good. And if the BN is really so degenerate as to turn it into a mask of hypocrisy, then it is the BN’s fault. The concept itself is not the problem. If the Pakatan Rakyat wants to “wake up” the people, they have to prove that they are the better choice, and not try to stop people from pursuing the “1Malaysia” dream.

Another mistake that the Pakatan Rakyat has committed is to treat “1Malaysia” as equivalent to the BN. In fact, the “Malaysian Malaysia” proposed by the DAP in the past is basically the twin to the BN’s “1Malaysia”. In that case, the Pakatan Rakyat should know very well what the people’s expectations are, for this idea can definitely traverse beyond political parties and politics, because whether the BN or the Pakatan Rakyat, as long as they can bring harmony and prosperity to the people, and protect the interests of all the people, people will definitely support them.

We all know that to achieve the “1Malaysia” dream is not easy. For there to be mutual acceptance and respect among people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, there must be mutual understanding, accommodation, and even a degree of compromise, so that we can have a peaceful coexistence. To be united, we must get rid of the estrangement among people that there is a “You and I”, for everyone to have equal and fair opportunities and rights.

In other words, in the world of “1Malaysia”, no one can enjoy special privileges. If the king breaks the law, he or she will have to be treated like the common people, not to mention those cronies or corrupt officials. So, be it BN or the Pakatan Rakyat, their first job is to prove that they can give back to the people what they have taken from them. They must also possess honesty, integrity, treat one and all equally, eradicate corruption, and become the winner in achieving the “1Malaysia” dream for the people. They should not waste time and energy in theoretical discussions, or even unnecessary tussle. – mysinchew.com
