Jakim to launch anti-Valentine's Day campaign

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), with about 250 volunteers from various non-governmental associations,  will kick-off its 'Mind the Valentine's Day Trap' campaign around Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Its director-general Othman Mustapha said the programme would be conducted around Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), Bukit Bintang and Masjid India and was aimed at exposing the volunteers to be people-oriented in combating social ills.

This would build their confidence, courage, ability to act and, within the framework of volunteerism, to combat social problems while developing their communication and interaction skills with the target group, he said in a statement in Putrajaya today.

He said the event would be launched at the As-Syakirin Mosque, Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) at 11am, on Saturday.

The Fatwa Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs in 2005 had decreed that celebrating Valentine's Day was forbidden in Islam as it could lead to moral decadence.
