Taking Who For A Ride about Modern Slavery?
Had an SOS call from a friend last Friday at about 8.00 pm while at work. She was like 15km from the place she needed to go from TTDI or commonly called Taman Tun to Concorde Kuala Lumpur. She wanted to know if I knew of any taxi (as we in BolehLand calls them) or cab numbers to fetch her. She has been trying to call in vain for a cab since 5.30 pm from the cab service stored in her mobile.
But every KL, PJ, TTDI and tourists know you can't get a cab from 5ish to past 7 in the evening when it is considered peak hours where you get thousands driving home (mostly in SOV or single occupant vehicle) after work or fetch kids home from school.
In fact you can't really get a cab at peak hours, 7 to 9 am for normal work hours, 9-10 am for those in retail business, 12noon to 2 pm lunch break, the super peak 5-8 pm longer if on a Friday and 11.30 pm to before 12 midnight (there is an extra charge for after midnight). Hey looks like you can't get a cab at all when you need them desperately during these time when you need to travel for one purpose or other.
Even if you do get one, there is no negotiation even if the cab signs has this large assuring notice it is a metered cab and there is no bargaining plus a smiley face there to perhaps take away your blues if you felt fleeced hah! Well at least the no bargaining part is true if you hail a cab during the above peak hours. A short distance from office to lunch say about 1km away is a flat RM10 rate, take it or leave it. Now your know what the no bargaining part of the message is there for eh?
But, whether at peak hou! rs or mo re so during rainy days, trying to flag a cab is as unnerving as depending on public transport, the snail paced unpredictable 'Rapid' buses. We can't fault our transport system really. Ask the cab or bus driver the solution to the jam, they'd refer to the tiny dot down south of Johor super efficient transport system.
But our BolehLand government and the City Hall folks even with countless overseas trips to study best urban transport systems don't have the political will to implement restricted zones in KL! Too much politics am told.
I suggested to my desperate friend why she didn't think of taking the connection bus or cab to the LRT about 2km away and would have at least got her to her destination. But you ask folks who have tried such alternative, they'd tell you they rather hop into a cab! The 2km distance from where I stay to the LRT is about a 30 mins if you are luck wait for the connecting bus and another 20 mins to reach there about an hour on peak hours and an hour during normal hours (waiting time almost the same). Which means you take about 90 mins to reach KL from PJ. So, do we blame us folks for wanting to drive SOV to KL for work or whatever reasons?
Is anything wrong with our public transport system? Not at all if you ensure they have yellow lane unobstructed movement. But we know how bad and inconsiderate BolehLand drivers are? They hoard the middle lane travelling at snail pace, hoard the motorbike lane, cut into bottleneck intersections, weave in and out whenever there is barely space, park indiscriminately or just want to show off their new car viz status!
Would increasing the traffic fines resolve our urban traffic woes and even high fatality from road accidents? Not likely. It may lead to more corruption than filling the coffers of the government. Wonder if the rush to impose higher fines is to help to brush a tiny speck of debt off our humongous debt pile up eh?
Are our frustration and woes towards our taxi fellows an exaggeration or due t! o the nu merous and age old unpleasant experience of taxi hailing and fleecing?
To be fair, there are very honest cab drivers and considerate ones. I'd often strike up a conversation with the taxi driver just to get a feel of the pulse of the real economy at ground zero or at cab land. The taxi fellows will tell you the real situation based on their daily or monthly collection.
Striking a conversation with them can also let you know how they view our leaders, politician, policies and don't get them about enforcement, traffic cops and JPJ fellows. Or about the best and worse passengers they picked up as you'd know their nationalities biasness which means the target group they have grouses are not likely to be picked up!
And from taxi drivers you'd know how widespread foreigners are literally running our country! You'd know from the conversation the slang in their speak and guess it's not a local driver! Had even encountered a many whose head seems to wobble when they speak or too fair a skin tone or unfamiliar facial construct to believe a local 'alibaba' is the driver. More so a real alibaba hah!
And, if you ask them if they own the taxis, they'd tell you the truth about monopoly and the slave like treatment and work they need to do to ensure they are able to drive the next day to feed their families. They really detest the monopolists and the cronies getting such licences enslaving them to toil for long hours just to be able to pay the daily rental on their cabs!
Don't get them talking politics coz you'd know who they support or who they trust. Once this cab driver was cursing race based politicians labelling them all kinds of animal names they can think of. The creature's name they most like to use on our politicians are cows, the slithering crawlers, even mules and donkeys. But rarely is the bovine creature ever named, which goes to show they are not so pigheaded racists than our politicians and some NGOs who has this love of using such names and ! showing such behaviour too!
So given our experience with cab drivers, what do we really make of the latest bigger than life '1-oness' saviour grandiose scheme launched last week – TR1M, the RM35 million rubber tires assistant to the over 65k cab fellows?
While it will help them save RM520 for Continental and Goodyear tires it will pump the millions into these two companies too. Will passengers benefit with lower fares? Or taxi drivers stop playing their cat and mouse games during peak hours and rainy days to pick up passengers? Wonder who is going to be taken for a ride with this TR1M free money eh?
Will the assurance to stop the slave like treatment meted to taxi cabs by the modern slave masters taxi monopolist be a reality. The question is who created these modern slave masters in the first place? Now this 1SlaveMaster wants to stop the modern slave masters of their own creation in about two years time. Why two years to stop the modern slave masters from exploiting their 'slaves'? Is it because the monopolists' are greedy and want some huge compensation payouts to exit? Is a new multi million ringgit compensation scam in the works that takes two years to ensure these modern slave masters become even richer when they surrender their monopoly? And will taxpayer's money be once again used to enrich cronies?
Some think this TR1M tyre relief fund is to inflate the ego of 1Leader and the party to drive home the point to the taxi cabs that they will get more free money and more 'help if they in return help back' the generous 1SlaveMaster eh?
Perhaps the 1SlaveMaster thinks this free wheels will ensure they don't hit any bumps but a smooth drive during GE13 to retain power again?
It's really not much RM35m to secure extra votes from taxi drivers compared to the millions that the other 1s' campaign dished out like BR1M. After all, you'd gain tenfold when you continue to hold the national kitty right?
Perhaps the taxi fellows believe the sincerity of! helping them even if they underwent decades of slavery by the modern slave master monopolists created by this TR1M saviour now. Time will tell. In life one needs to swallow one's pride to admit being an ass or donkey and the culprit in causing suffering and miseries to others. In this case, no sorry to our modern slaves for the situation they are in. It's odd the silence from our TR1M hero not naming the modern slave masters. But we common folks and taxi drivers alike know who created these modern slave masters. So it's odd, the very people who created them now want to come out saving the slaves to make themselves some TR1M superheros hah!
No asking for forgiveness was heard for the unfair and slave like treatment meted by our modern business monopolist slave masters. Perhaps our TR1M hero need not apologise for his predecessors' action because it's not in their nature to ask for forgiveness anyway. They have already asked for forgiveness sometime back right? which is actually a blanket forgiveness for past revealed wrongs and hidden ones that they will surface later on to gain popularity votes – and future wrongs to commit once they retain power huh?
Now that our hero has helped changed the tires of taxis, will the next free money be given to change two wheelers, three wheelers trishaws and what about those 10 wheelers that damage and pollute roads?
This TR1M free money means you got to get it from somewhere. Increase road offense fines may be a source of funding, or just print more paper money or deprive other needy causes? Where is the money coming from? Who is the SlaveMaster going to charge the bill to?
Will TR1M make up for more courteous cab drivers, would they pick up passengers no matter the time of the day or night and not fleece passengers during peak hours. The important question is will pumping RM502 for a new set of wheelers make our cab drivers change their politician affiliation? That's more than a RM35 million question eh?
