BolehLand a Nation of Burp x 10

Apart from being a land of mat rempits, mat si(al)kal, a growing obese nation, sex fiend politicians, including possibly the first to can women for consuming alcohol for a supposedly progressive moderate modern holy nation, BolehLand is also creeping up the rank in a dubious league as the world's 10th largest consumer of alcohol according to a World Health Organisation.

Even with also likely the most expensive alcohol prices in the world for tourists and encountered several terse situations in the past that threatened the livelihood of millions of people including shutting down businesses that sold alcohol due to some overtly pious religious fellos, we still drink more alcohol than water.

Statistics by the international body this year also showed that Malaysians spent over USD 500 million on alcohol with a per capita consumption of seven litres. Beer consumption in multi-ethnic Malaysia is 11 litres per capita. The government said the problem of alcohol consumption in the country was getting serious.

Serious? As serious as eating junk food, bad driving, the behaviour of polluticians, religious intolerance & bigotry, racism, brain drain, drug addiction, corruption, inflation, mat rempits, mat sikal, abuse of authority, addicted to social media, school bully and all the other ills being highlighted daily and deemed serious by the authorities?

Some may think it an understatement when the Deputy Malaysia's Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie said as reported by the media that "The public has to understand that alcohol is not part of our culture and it will bring harm if it is abused," "Alcohol is not only causing a lot of health issues but is also contributing to a significant number of accidents," and seems that drinking and driving caused 30 per cent of road accidents nationwide, with 38 per cent of these resulting in fatalities.

Mat rempits, mat sikals, sex with foreign prostitutes, holding hands in public, abusing thi! ngs from cats to foreign maids, walloping students by students and students by teachers and vice versa, incest and the rather boring subject of corruption, wastage and what have you are also not part of our culture and have harmed and abused us for so long. So what or which part of our culture that has contributed to the greater good of us all? Anything that is abused is harmful right. Just last month, too much of a national dish, nasi lemak has been blamed for a contributory factor to rising obesity among the young and old alike.

So singling out alcohol as the bad guy is a rather disoriented thinking right? There may be some who said that eating nasi lemak is not the root cause of accident and debts. Unless of course one is eating it while driving which isnt an uncommon sight every morning when drivers are caught in a traffic gridlock and use the jam to have their breakfast.

But looking at the statistics of say motorcyclists who are killed, we wonder how many have been attributed to alcohol consumption. That is worrying if it is only 1% and it involves those whose religion considers it as haram, (prohibition) right?

Perhaps this latest spot will spur those moral religious guardians to push for a total prohibition of alcohol and for enthusiastic local councils to pick up where they left in Shah Alam of terminating the licence of any business that sell alcohol and have employees whose religion prohibits any contact, five senses we can suppose to be working in such establishments or businesses.

Agreed that being a drunk is not a pretty sight to look when one is in that state and even worse when the hangover sets in. And an alcoholic is really a pathetic sight. But addiction to anything makes one rather pathetic, too?

So how what would the government do to push our ranking lower? Raise taxes or total ban? For those who enjoy a pint or two rather than a keg or a peg, or just one cocktail concoction of hard liquor or womens liqueur mix, should we feel guilty and think ourselves addi! ct and d eprive ourselves of little pleasures?

So should your truly dispose of the vin rouge collection so that our rank dips? Well, it all comes down to moderation and why should anyone who is allowed to drink be made to feel guiltier than a corrupt person, a pervert, a smoking addict, an obese or a sex fiend or even a bigot and racist?

Should we cloud our mind and blame one race or two for earning us such distinction? Or is the defence of allowing alcohol consumption and request to lower its taxes makes us insensitive or drunks? Lets not get intoxicated with overt righteous religiosity or moral righteousness and accuse wine or beer lovers of giving holy BolehLand a bad name. Or, confine those who drink to a leper kind of colony corner at some God forsaken place.

There is a saying that 'If wine be the liquid of the gods then beer is the liquid of the slobs.' However, beer and wine drinkers will always think they are the connoisseur of fine drinking compared to those cocktail lovers whose specialty is to crow about the merit of a cocktail over a glass of merlot or a peg of Gordon Bleu. Their supposedly sound logic is because a cocktail has more than one hard 'stuff' giving it a 'lethal' albeit cheaper concoction of consuming a few good stuff in a 'V' shaped glass receptacle! It's kinda difficult to swallow this bit of tipsy logic.

Wonder which is more worrying and getting serious? Drunks on the rise or the nation seems to be obsessively on the high and drunk on matters of sex, salacious sleaze, scandals and smut, huh?

The similarity between a drunk and a politician is, both are able to talk nonsense. The difference is, the drunk isn't conscious of it blaming it on the bottle which is forgivable. The politician on the other hand, is conscious of the nonsense he is speaking and drive listeners to drink to cope with the depression they get listening to the politician's verbal diarrhea!

Meanwhile, while it is still permissible, bottoms up then and no, this blog was not writte! n on a h igh. Now where is the mouse, burp!
YAHMEH!!!
