KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — The government plans to amend the Civil Law Act 1956 to raise the quantum of compensation awarded for injury and death, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim said today.

He was quoted by Bernama Online as saying the proposal will be brought to the Cabinet for discussion following the ministry's discussions with consumers and insurance companies on existing premium schemes.

"We plan to raise the premium on compensation for injury and death and hope that it can be completed by 2016," he said in Parliament to a question from Teluk Intan MP M. Manogaran.

Lim said the government was sensitive to the issue, adding that the Finance Ministry would discuss its plans to increase compensation amounts with the Malaysian Bar.

The existing compensation scheme has been criticised by some for capping the productive life of a claimant at the age of 55 when determining loss of earnings.
