Stop the theatrics and tell us actual debt, Najib told

Image
Taking prime minister Najib Razak to task over his assurance that the national debt would not breach the critical 55% threshold of the country's gross domestic product, PAS's Dzulkefly Ahmad has challenged him to state the actual amount of the debt. "So how much is the national debt if it has yet to breach 55% of the GDP?" asked the Kuala Selangor member of parliament in his response to Najib's speech yesterday. Addressing the "Invest Malaysia 2012" conference, Najib said the government had taken steps to reduce fiscal deficit to ensure economic growth, adding that the country's fiscal deficit now stood at 4.8 per cent of GDP versus 5.0 per cent. But Dzulkefly said it was not the first time such claims were made by the Finance minister. He recalled a parliamentary answer to him earlier this year which stated that apart from fiscal debts of RM456.1 billion, the country was saddled with RM116.76 billion in debt by statut

DAP's P Ramasamy claims that the violent beating of V Ganabatirao and his brother Papa Raidu was 'BN-inspired'. Isa's entry as Felda co-op member 'illegal'

Image
Isa Samad's entry into the membership of Koperasi Permodalan Felda (KPF) "may be illegal" as it violates the KPF by-laws, the Malaysia Cooperative Societies Commission (MCCC) has ruled. However, no action can be taken because the KPF by-laws do not have any provision to cancel his membership, a three-member MCCC panel ruled last week. "Hence, Isa's membership in KPF remains intact," the panel ruled. It said that the KPF board's acceptance of Isa's membership was against the cooperative's by-laws. This means that Isa, a former long-serving menteri besar of Negeri Sembilan, can stay on as KPF chairperson. The panel made its decision on May 23, following an application challenging Isa's membership in KFP filed by Abdul Talib Ali and 15 other KPF members. The panel was chaired by Kamarulzaman Mohamad Buhari, with Muriddan Elias and Zainab Othman as members. The lawyer representing the applicants, Ahmad Nizam Ramli, yesterday receive
