A-G has seen drafts of press law changes

Drafts of proposed amendments to press control laws have been seen by the attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail. But he rejected suggestions that he had approved them. He was merely accommodating the demands of the “customer” (the Home Ministry), he told MalaysiaKini on Wednesday.

“I have given my views on it. It involves some of the existing laws — Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, the Sedition Act 1948 and Internal Security Act 1960,” he said. Asked if they could be tabled when Parliament meets in March, Abdul Gani said “you have to ask the customer (the Home Minister).”
The government is far from ready to amend the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, said Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on Wednesday, a day after his ministry’s top civil servant had said the opposite. Hishammuddin said the proposed changes are still “at the very, very early stages” and it has not even been decided what exactly the amendments will entail.

“Nothing has been finalised. Whatever views will first be brought before the committee,” Hishammuddin said at Parliament House after a meeting of the government’s communications strategy committee. On Tuesday his ministry’s secretary-general Mahmood Adam said the government planned to table the amendments in Parliament in March. But Hishammuddin said: “Even we don’t know what amendments will be made… We might even loosen (provisions of the law),” he said.
