LYING, A MALAYSIAN BENCHMARK?

NADES interview with James Wong, the co-designer of the "Malaysian Gardens" at the Chelsea Flower Show on Tuesday, was shorter than expected. The question was: "Are all these plants from Malaysia or were they sourced from other countries?" JAMES was blunt to the core and gave an honest answer. They are not from Malaysia, he said, but similar species could be found in Malaysia. Importing from Malaysia would be a problem because of quarantine regulations. We cannot import anything which has soil in it." For the sake of a medal, it was felt that some sort of "back-door arrangements" had to be made and it appeared acceptable because it was not the first time it had been done. Actually, it was the first time someone had found out! AND WE THOUGHT ONLY THE ELECTIONS COMMITTEE AND THE JUDICIARY ETC ETC ETC CHEATED! WHO ELSE CHEATED? DANG! Malaysia is everready to be robbed

Industries Are Prepared For The Subsidy Rationalisation Programme KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian industries are prepared for the subsidy rationalisation programme, said Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed. Mustapa said the ministry has discussed with them on the electricity tariffs and they were okay with the adjustment, which they said must not be too steep. “The public understood the government’s move as it would be good for the country,” he told reporters at the convocation of Halal Executive Programme graduates here today. As part of its ongoing subsidy rationalisation exercise, the government today announced that average electricity tariffs will be raised by 2.23 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh), or 7.12 per cent, to 33.54 sen kWh, from 31.31 sen kWh effective Wednesday, June 1. However, the move will not affect about 75 per cent of the population who mainly consume less than 300 kWh per month. Mustapa said the changes in electricity tariff would have a mi

UMNO- self-induced rigor mortis

by sakmongkol AK47 I have written so many essays critical of UMNO in the past. Friends asked me why am I still in UMNO? How can I write many nasty things about UMNO and seemed to get away with it-why haven't I been hauled up by the UMNO disciplinary committee or something and not ticked off? Isn't there anything good that UMNO has done? Let's clear one thing first. This is the source of many of UMNO's problems. Some people assigned to themselves the right to determine who should or shouldn't be in UMNO. They then judge others in terms of their thinking and criteria. Pak Lah or any others can't measure up to Mahathir in many aspects. But they are not necessarily inferior to Mahathir. They are different. They must be judged on objective terms, not the subjective standards of one Mahathir. Najib doesn't seem to do things anything right according to Mahathir. The old man is so stressed up and suffers physical debilitations. The problem worsens to become person-c

Power tariff hike akin to 'daylight robbery'...

Image
PKR has termed the hike in electricity tariff announced yesterday as "daylight robbery" as it benefits capitalists at the expense of the people. According to party chief of strategy Rafizi Ramli (left), the fine print in the government's announcement shows that the increase in cost borne by the independent power providers will in effect be passed to TNB, which will in turn pass it to end users in the form of tariff hikes. Worse still, the new mechanism will mean that consumers will face electricity tariff hikes twice a year, since under the new "fuel cost pass through" mechanism, the cost of coal and gas used in power generation will be reviewed on a six-monthly basis. "TNB achieves a status quo financially, the people bear the burden from the tariff hikes and the IPPs are not affected at all from this exercise because of the fuel cost pass through mechanism. "This is really robbing the rakyat to feed the crony-capitalists," Rafizi told reporter

Tan Sri Robert Phang have been cleared by MACC

This blogger was just alerted that Tan Sri Robert Phang have been cleared by MACC with regard to allegation in this blog of him trying to bribe a Ministry's Secretary General. Read back posting here . Robert Phang was making ruckus demanding MACC to investigate a case already openned by police's commercial crime division against Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli with regards to losses at MAS during his Chairmanship and allegations of graft against Tan Sri Gani Patail involving Haj pilgrimmage. The revelation by this blogger against Phang serve the purpose to get the attention to reveal the ridiculous allegations vociferously made by Phang. So he is released, but it is only because of insufficient evidence to charge him. It does not mean it didn't happen. God knows and this blogger stand by the story and his source. However, there is many more from were it came from. Together cleared is Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail from allegation of graft over his Haj pilgrimage also by

Yong: Who is Hisham trying to fool?

Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein's murky views about the self-proclaimed 'Sulu Sultan' Mohd Akjan Ali is laughable, according to a local Sabah opposition party. KOTA KINABALU: The Home Ministry has been urged to make public the documents which Mohd Akjan Ali Muhammad claimed to have submitted to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak concerning the dropping of the Sulu Sultanate claim to Sabah. Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee made this call when commenting on Home Minister Hishamuddin Tun Husseins statement that he had ordered a probe into Akjans citizenship. In one of Akjans earlier statements after the fake coronation, he had alleged that he has documents for the prime minister concerning the dropping of the Sulu Sultanate claim to Sabah. I now call on Hishammuddin to reveal to the public what these documents are. Do any of the documents have to do with the letters from ex-prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to Akjan relating to the Philippine claim to Sa

Electricity tariff has been raised by an average of 7%. Not everyone will be affected. On the plus side, those who use less than RM77 a month will probably not be affected. However, those who are in this category please do not be too happy; they will be affected indirectly. Those who use more than RM77 a month will be affected directly. Who are those using more than RM77? Majority of these will be middle class households in cities and towns. If you have a fridge, 2 air-conditioners, a washing machine, do some ironing and use lights at night, you will probably be in this category. Most of us staying in KL or other towns will probably be in this category. It is no more a luxury to have air-conditions , as our weather has become hotter compared to the 60s and 70s. Fridge and washing machines have become necessity too due to the modern lifestyle. If you run a small business, you will probably be affected too. When businesses are affected, cost of doing business will go up, and this rise

Can PAS help bring about change?

Image
The writer is optimistic that PAS can bring about the positive change that is badly needed in Malaysia. COMMENT By Koon Yew Yin A few days ago, someone sent me an anonymous e-mail appeal addressed to voters. According to the appeal, the coming (general) election, more so than others, is a vital one because we are at a crossroads. If we get it right we will prosper; if we get it wrong, we will suffer as we have seen in our neighbouring countries. I cannot agree more with these sentiments. In the last three years, I have written about the socio-economic and political crossroads that the country is at, but that has been to a general audience. I am glad that I now have the opportunity to share my thoughts on this subject with a PAS audience. This is the first time that I am addressing PAS supporters and this is also probably the first opportunity PAS has had to interact with someone like me. Let me begin by posing a question. The question that I and many other Malaysians want to ask PAS is

Sarawak CM's office 'issued cheques to buy votes'

Image
An election monitor reveals that the cheques were also made out to longhouse chiefs, to be cashed when BN candidates won. Malaysian Election Observers Network coordinator Ong Boon Keong has revealed more damning evidence of alleged vote-buying in the recent Sarawak elections, following an equally controversial video expos of the alleged offence on May 26. Ong is giving the authorities two weeks to act, failing which he will initiate a nationwide campaign to mobilise voters in rejecting all candidates who have a similar 'strategy' in mind for the coming general election. He revealed photocopies of vouchers dated March 25 and 27 purportedly from the Chief Minister' s Office, showing that a payment of RM15,000 had been made to members of a longhouse and RM1,000 to another recipient. Ong, who has been involved in registering voters in the interiors of Sarawak since 2009, said he was reliably informed by local observers that the payments were made after the dissolution of the st

UMNO admits Malays are Immigrants from Cambodia

Expedition To Trace Malay Heritage To Cambodia SIEM REAP- Kampung Cham, a Malay settlement established in the first century, will be the focus of the Jejak Warisan Jawi 2 (JWJ2) expedition in Cambodia, the second country on the itinerary after Thailand. ”We’re not sure whether or not Malay language is still being used there. We need to check this out,” said expedition advisor Saiful Anwar Yahaya. He said several cultural and sporting events would take place to forge closer ties between the delegation from Malaysia and the villagers. Saiful Anwar said they would also visit historical sites such as the Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom temples which may shed light on the history of the Malays in Cambodia. The expedition, organised by Majma’ Budaya and Warisan Jawi as well as the Putra 1Malaysia Club, is supported by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry. — BERNAMA

Power tariffs raised, 75% of rakyat not affected

Image
PUTRAJAYA - As part of its ongoing subsidy rationalisation exercise, the government Monday announced that average electricity tariffs will be raised by 2.23 sen kilowatt per hour (kWh) or 7.12 per cent to 33.54 sen kWh, from 31.31 sen kWh, effective Wednesday, June 1. However, the move will not affect about 75 per cent of the population who mainly consume less than 300 kWh per month. The announcement was made at a joint press conference by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop and Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui. They said the 7.12 per cent hike was due to the increase in natural gas price to the power sector. As a result, Tenaga Nasional's average tariff had to be reviewed upwards by two per cent or 0.63 sen kWh. "The review will enable the utility company to increase its investment in better electricity infrastructure including supply and distribution," he said, adding that it would invest

Electricity up 7%: No measures to cut graft, snap polls within months

Image
UPDATE 3 Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced a hike in electricity rates that will see consumers paying an average of 7.12 per cent higher beginning June 1. But while he tried to soften the blow for the poorest in the country, he failed to implement a plan to sustainably keep prices down and reduce national debt. Najib was also sharply criticised for announcing "short-term" measures to facilitate snap general elections that pundits now predict will be in July or after Hari Raya in August. "Subsidies have to come down, that's for sure. But corruption, wastage and so forth must also be tackled. What Malaysia is a grand plan to tackle inflation and contain the widening deficit rather than ad-hoc measures," Ramon Navaratnam, head of the Centre for Public Policy Studies, told Malaysia Chronicle. In line, with a much-criticised programme to cut subsidies on a range of consumer essentials, such as petrol, fuel and sugar, government officials announced that power p

Putting private sector employees to pasture at the age of 55 is equivalent to a brain drain. Trade unions say all the experience will go to waste. SUBANG JAYA: Trade unions feel that the term brain drain should also apply to senior citizens. They feel that once a healthy individual with vast experience is told to leave when he or she reaches retirement age, the company will face a brain drain. Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor said those in their late 50s and 60s are hardworking, healthy and an asset to any company. In the private sector they are forced to retire at 55 even though they can work for another 10 years, Abdul Halim said. In January, MTUC proposed to the Human Resouces Ministry to extend the retirement age of workers in the private sector to 58 to be on par with the public sector. In April, Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam indicated that the retirement age of those in the private sector may be raised to 58 . We feel that 58

Back to basics in award of scholarships

Image
Back in December 2009, this blogger seek for a review in the role of MRSM and other boarding schools here . The number qualified has risen dramatically and boarding school does not meet the current role in education. Boarding school is a misallocation of resources for elite middle class few over the masses. The role of boarding school must go back to the basic of assisting social mobility for the facility-deprived rural and urban poor students. Few months back, this blogger was in the audience listening to Prime Minister, Dato Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak's speak in the Parliament building. The gist of his speech is the new way forward for the country. The 1Malaysia Government will be fair to all. In the reward of scholarships, he said the Bumiputera affirmative action program will remain in tact. On the same note he said, it is not fair that the straight As or A+s are not awarded scholarships. The SPM result were just out. Students are in a rush for placement into Universities and C

MCA demands in line with governments stand, says Wee

Image
By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani May 30, 2011 KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 MCA Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong said today that his partys position over the ongoing Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship row is in line with government policy. Wee, who is also the deputy education minister, was the first to raise grievances about the PSDs distribution of scholarships this year and claimed that 363 straight A+ students had failed to get the scholarships despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razaks promise last year that all students scoring 8A+ and above would secure placements. However, Najib maintained last Friday that the government never promised overseas scholarships for all top SPM students. Najib said what his administration had guaranteed was PSD scholarships to both local and overseas universities for students with SPM results of 8A+ and better. Today, Wee (picture) said he agreed with the prime ministers statement. I also wish to stress that when the government had earlier announced

Bangladesh woman takes 'attacker's' penis to police

DHAKA: A 40-year-old Bangladeshi woman cut off a man's penis during an alleged attempted rape and took it to a police station as evidence, police in a remote part of Bangladesh said on Monday. The woman, a married mother of three, was attacked while she was sleeping in her shanty in Jhalakathi district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Dhaka, on Saturday night, officers said. "As he tried to rape her, the lady cut his penis off with a knife. She then wrapped up the penis in a piece of polythene and brought it to the Jhalakathi police station as evidence of the crime," police chief Abul Khaer told AFP. The woman has filed a case accusing the man -- who is also 40 and a married father of five -- of attempted rape, saying that he had been harassing her for six months. The severed penis has been kept at the police station and the rape suspect was undergoing treatment in hospital. "We shall arrest him once his condition gets better," Khaer added.

Scorpenes-Altantuya: French courts to call Najib, Baginda as witnesses

Image
UPDATED Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is in a pickle. He has been accused of plotting sexcapades to bring down his arch enemy Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. His UMNO party has been busily making allegations of immorality and demanding that Anwar resign to spare the country shame. Yet, it is Najib himself who has and will again put the country in the greatest media spotlight, and regrettably, of the negative sort. It is almost certain that as the main protagonist, he will be called by the French courts to testify over a suspiciously expensive acquisition of 2 Scorpene and one Agosta submarines in 2002. The Malaysian leader faces allegations of having received kickbacks, whether directly or indirectly, from French arms-maker DCN. "Our lawyers have advised us that it could take anything from the next few weeks or the next couple of months until a judge is appointed for the open trial in France," SUARAM director Cynthia Gabriel told a press conference on Monday. No political party is entitled to defend Putrajaya

Image
By Kim Quek | TMI There is something disturbing in Premier Najib Razaks repeated and frantic calls to defend Putrajaya. The latest, when he was addressing youth at the World Youth day gathering in Putrajaya on May 28. After asking the youth Will you defend Putrajaya with me?, and getting a positive answer, he then shouted: Defend Putrajaya! Defend Putrajaya! Defend Putrajaya! His equally paranoid call on an earlier occasion was during the recent 61st Umno general assembly when he shrieked: Even if our bodies are crushed and our lives lost, brothers and sisters, whatever happens, we must defend Putrajaya. Any novice to this country must have imagined that Malaysia must be facing an imminent foreign invasion, otherwise, why should its prime minister be exhorting so earnestly for the defence of its administrative capital? But we Malaysians know that this is not a case of foreign invasion, but a reflection of the sick mentality of the incumbent political power which has ruled this country

DPM Muhyiddin continues his BULLSHITTING!

From the print edition page N4, but this from Star Online, Desi says: Muhyiddin, you are persisting in your BULLSHITTING about the petrol price and the subsidies element! Monday May 30, 2011 Opposition exploiting petrol price hike, says DPM GERIK: The Opposition is exploiting the price hike issue despite it being a trend which is affecting other countries, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. **** Muhyiddin said the Opposition should understand that price hikes were not just happening in Malaysia but also in Europe, Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. Addressing the Gerik Umno division annual meeting here yesterday, Muhyiddin said the Governments capability to bear the cost of subsidies had its limitations. He reminded the people that they must be prepared to bear the cost in the future. Even though the Governments decision not to increase the price of RON 95 petrol was lauded by many, the Government is actually burdened by having to bear the subsidies furt

PKR failed to pay rent for 30 months

Image
Party leaders are accused of lying in saying that they had been prompt in paying RM20,000 per month to the landlord. PETALING JAYA: New details have emerged that PKR may not have paid rental for its party headquarters in Merchant Square here for almost 30 months, owing arrears of about RM600,000 to the landlord. The party had entered into a five-year lease with the landlord beginning July 2008 for RM20,000 per month. FMT learnt that the party paid rental only until November 2008. Since then, not a single payment has been made, said a party insider today. And the partys top leaders are lying in saying that they had been prompt in paying rents, he said. PKR leaders revealed last week that the party faced possible eviction from their party headquarters because the landlord failed to service the bank loan. As a result, Affin Bank has initiated an auction to be held on June 9 to recover its money. Playing the blame-game Laying the blame squarely on the landlord, party leaders like treasurer
